Getting started

Is Baltic Water really free?

Yes. The whole app is free, with no ads and no subscription. An optional tip jar in Settings lets you support the developer, but it unlocks nothing and the app works fully without it.

Which iPhones are supported?

iPhones running iOS 18.6 or later, including iPhone Duo. The app works in portrait and landscape.

Which cities are covered?

124 coastal cities and towns in nine Baltic countries, from Saint Petersburg and Stockholm to Copenhagen, Gdańsk, Riga and the Åland capital Mariehamn. Almost 200 popular beaches are listed under them. Use the search on the map to find a city by name, in any supported language.

How do I change the language?

Tap the flag icon at the top right of any screen (on pop-up screens it sits to the left of the close button). The change is instant and needs no restart. See all nine languages below.

I'm on iPhone Duo. What changes?

Unfolded, the map and the city page sit side by side on one seamless screen. Folded, the city page fills the front screen. The layout follows the screen as it opens and closes.

Temperatures & data

Where does the temperature come from?

The headline number is the average of every source reporting for that city right now. The app asks up to seven open data sources: ocean models, satellites and national coastal stations. See the full list below. Open any city to see each source's own reading.

Why does a city show fewer than 7 sources (for example 5/7)?

Satellite and model sources cover the whole Baltic, but the stations of SMHI, FMI and IMGW-PIB only count when one is within 350 km of the city. Sources also publish on their own schedules, some daily and others every one to fourteen days, and sometimes one is temporarily offline. The counter shows how many are reporting right now. The average uses only those, and the app never invents a number.

How accurate are the temperatures?

Models and satellites measure the sea surface over a wide area, while stations measure one spot. Averaging gives a solid estimate, but the water at your beach can differ by a degree or two depending on wind, depth and shelter. Open a city to compare the sources yourself.

Where does the 10-day forecast come from?

From the Open-Meteo Marine ocean model, the only one of the seven sources that predicts rather than measures. Satellites and coastal stations report what the water is doing now, not what it will do next week. Past readings are shown for the last 30 days.

Is this safe for deciding whether to swim?

Temperature is only one factor. The app doesn't report currents, waves, water quality, ice or algae. Always follow local warnings and use your own judgment.

Using the app

How do I save favorite cities?

Add a city to your favorites from its page, then open the Favorites tab to see all their current temperatures in one list, one tap from the map.

How do I find beaches and get directions?

Open a city and scroll to its popular beaches. Tap a beach for a photo carousel, a map pin and its coordinates, then use Open in Maps for turn-by-turn directions in Apple Maps. Beach photos come from Wikimedia Commons, each shown with its author and license.

Why does the app icon change?

In Settings, choose Classic, Cold or Warm, or leave it on Automatic. Automatic switches to Cold when the Baltic averages below 12 °C and to Warm above 18 °C.

Can I turn off the water sounds?

Yes. The splash and “plop” sounds can be switched off in Settings & About.

Troubleshooting

The app seems stuck loading. What can I do?

Every reading is fetched live from public meteorological services when you open a city, so a slow or offline connection is almost always the cause. Try this:

  1. Check that Wi-Fi or mobile data is working.
  2. Pull down or tap the refresh icon to try again.
  3. Force-quit the app and open it again.
  4. Still stuck? Contact us with the city name and what you see.
Does the app work offline?

The map and interface open without a connection, but every temperature, chart and beach photo needs the network to load, since none of it is bundled with the app.

A city shows no temperature or an old one.

That usually means no source has a current reading for it at the moment. Check back in a few hours, since some satellite analyses publish only once a day or less often. If it stays empty for days, tell us the city name.

The temperature doesn't match what I felt in the water.

This is expected within a degree or two. Sources measure the surface over a wide area or at a distant station, and a sheltered, shallow beach warms faster than the open sea. See accuracy above.

Can I use the app without accepting the license agreement?

No. It is shown once, on first launch, and must be accepted to continue. You can read it again any time in Settings & About.

Privacy & tips

What data does the app collect?

None for tracking. There are no accounts or analytics, and the app does not need your location. Public data requests go straight to the open data providers. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

What is the tip jar?

An optional way to support the developer, found in Settings & About. Tips are one-time purchases that unlock nothing, and the app works fully without them. The price is shown in your App Store currency.
